ABUJA — In carrying out its mandate of ensuring that farmers were not shortchanged, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) Abuja on Wednesday sealed off fertilizer shops for selling substandard products to farmers.
The action of the authorities followed complaints from the public on the genuineness of the farm product being sold at the shop located at Wuro-Patuji Tudun Wada, Ahmadu Bello Way in Mubi in Mubi South Local Government Area, Adamawa.
Assistant Director, Farm Inputs Support Services of the Ministry, Mr. Sale Adamu told newsmen in Mubi, that the product was confirmed as substandard after laboratory test.
He explained that the outcome of the test shows that nutrient content prescribed on the bag read N.P.K 20-10-10, but laboratory analysis revealed that nutrient content of the fertilizer is N.P.K 7-0-6.
Farmers are cheated because at the end they would not get the value for their money, because at the end of the day, it will affect the yield of the products they intend to cultivate.
So as an authority we are carrying out this assignment in order to safeguard the interest of our farmers.
This particular shop was found to be selling substandard fertilizer products and by the regulation, the FMARD is mandated to seal any shop or production facility that is found to be engaged in either production or sales of substandard fertilizer.
Therefore we sealed this shop from selling until further investigation, he said.
Adamu who said the distributor get supply of the fertilizer got the products from Solar Fertilizer and Chemical Products located Yankaba in Kano State, warned those who were involved in such unwholesome practice to desist.
The official explained that anyone caught would face the law either fine or imprisonment.
He further advised farmers to always buy quality Fertilizer for good results and to report any dealer who engaged in such practice.
