ENUGU — The Local Government election for Chairmen and Councilors held in the 17 Local Government Areas in Enugu on Wednesday was marked with violence, loss of lives, and properties.

Electorates who came out to exercise their franchise were scared away with gunshots while some unlucky individuals lost their lives.

In a video clip that has gone viral, an eyewitness reporting from Obeagu Awkunanaw recounted that many persons were wounded by stray bullets while some received machete cuts on their heads; vehicles were burnt, and the lifeless body of a female Civil Defense officer was seen.

In another report, WAPN gathered that four reporters from Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) and a staff of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) ran into those gunmen in Obeagu, Awkunanaw in Enugu South LGA; unluckily, one Chigozie Alex-Nwafor and the bus driver Ebuka Ogbozor received machete cuts before they were set free.

Akpugo Ward 3 in Nkanu West LGA also experienced heavy sporadic gunshots scaring away voters, election officials, observers, journalists, and others.

Meanwhile, the newly elected Chairman of the National Union of Journalists, Sam Udekwe has condemned the violence witnessed today especially as meted out on the journalists on duty to cover the election.

Udekwe described the unprovoked attack on his colleagues as morally reprehensible while appealing on security agencies in the state to keep to their promises and responsibility of securing lives and properties.
