Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have issued a heartfelt message to the people of Ukraine following Russia’s military invasion, as they encourage global leaders to do the same as the crisis grows ever more devastating.
Harry and Meghan’s statement came after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine in the early hours of Thursday morning, entering from the north, east, and south of the country, bombarding airports, and eventually seizing areas such as the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex – who stepped down as senior members of the British royal family in 2020 and live in the US – have said they “stand with the people of the Ukraine” and condemned Russian President, Vladimir Putin’s invasion of the sovereign nation.
Writing in a joint statement on their non-profit Archewell’s website, the couple made their stance clear, and urged world leaders to do the same.
The statement reads: “Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and all of us at Archewell stand with the people of Ukraine against this breach of international and humanitarian law and encourage the global community and its leaders to do the same.”
They are the first royals to make a statement about the Russian invasion.
