YOLA — A non-governmental organization, ‘Stop Abusing Youths’ has flagged off sensitization programme tagged “Save hundred thousand youth on drug abuse (SHUTYDA)” aimed at eradicating the menace of drug abuse in society.

The programme which targets 50 selected Junior Secondary Schools across Adamawa was held at Government Capital Day Secondary School Jimeta-Yola.

Speaking at the event, the National Chairman of the Foundation Comrade Muhammed Sani Abubakar said the programme was designed to sensitize those who are vulnerable to drug abuse on its dangers and effects on health.

He expressed optimism that with the programme on ground cases of drug abuse will be reduced drastically in schools and thanked the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Adamawa State Command, and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Adamawa State wing for their support and cooperation in the execution of the programme.

In their separate remarks, officials of the Foundation, Suleiman Bello Mohammed and Cynthia Wilfred noted that drugs played a vital role in fueling the crisis in the society, hence the need to enlighten youths on its effects.

They explained that a drug addict cannot contribute anything positive to the growth of society and called on students to shun drug abuse.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman, Yola North of the Foundation Abdullahi Hamman urged the students to utilize the knowledge acquired and step down to their peers in their various localities.

In a paper presentation, Alhaji Abdullahi Sulaimam described hard drugs and other intoxicants as the greatest enemy to their health, noting that whoever wants to be mentally sound should desist from taking hard drugs.

The highlight of the event was the inauguration of SAY Free Drug Club which would serve as ambassadors of SAY in school and their immediate environments.
