A bill aimed at promoting sanitation and public hygiene and to prevent open defecation across Jigawa state has been passed by the State House of Assembly.

The bill was passed on Tuesday during the House plenary presided by the Speaker, Hon Idris Garba Jahun.

According to the Speaker, when the bill was signed into law, any person caught urinating or defecating openly not in the house, public toilet, and other designated places will be sentenced to one-month imprisonment, committed to community service, or a minimum of five thousand naira fine (N5,000.00) fine.

The chairman House Committee on Water Resources, Hon. Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, a member representing Miga constituency, while presenting the bill for the third reading earlier said the bill was brought after consultation and collecting inputs from civil societies, professionals, civil servants, religious leaders and other stakeholders.

“Any person who constructs a house, establishes a factory or commercial centre must construct toilets in the premises and failure to do so will attract penalties,” he said.

Dangyatin stated that the bill has made a provision for the establishment of a technical working committee at state and local government levels to support the implementation of the law.
