Nigerians have taken to the microblogging site, Twitter to share their awful experiences with horrible employers.
On Monday, TechCabal published an investigative report titled: Tyranny in the workplace: The chaotic culture of Bento Africa which was an exposé of how the CEO of a tech start-up, Bento Africa, Ebun Okubanjo terribly treats his employees.
The publication stirred up an explosive conversation on Twitter about toxic workplaces in Nigeria with the hashtag #horriblebosses in which there were mentions of numerous companies.
So far, the companies listed in the toxic workplace scandal include Bento Africa, Beat FM, Reliance HMO, Klasha, WHER, Gladepay, Kuda, Gokada, SheLeadsAfrica, Hip TV among others.
Some of the complaints range from poor salary, working conditions, and the toxic work environment.
Stories of arbitrary deductions and lack of job security also were part of the issues raised by those sharing their stories.
Since the federal government lifted its ban on Twitter in the country on January 12, there has been a return to normal in terms of active usage by Nigerians to propagate social issues.
The Nigerian tech ecosystem has grown tremendously, contributing significantly to the country’s economy in the past, having raised over $1.7 billion in funding, in 2021 especially.
While the industry is being described as a major growth enabler in terms of decent work, the recent development has shown that behind the good image represented outside of the Nigerian tech space, lies a toxic environment with unfavourable work conditions.
