Disturbed by some innovations introduced in Islamic marriages which are contrary to the teachings of Islam, the Muslim Council of Nigeria, Adamawa State has directed all its branches across the state to ensure that such practices are banned.

It is in line with the directive that the Hong local government branch on Sunday organized a one-day sensitization seminar for Chief Imams of Jumma’at Mosques and Preachers in the local government.

In his opening remark at the event held at COE Hong Staff School, the chairman of the council in the area, Mallam Usman Umar Shall said the decision to ban all un-Islamic innovations was taken after due consultation with all District Heads in the local government based on the complaints on the high cost of expenditures in marriage as a result of innovations.

 According to him, after the seminar, the Chief Imams will include in their sermons the banning of innovations in marriage while preachers will continue to emphasize dos and don’ts in Islamic marriage. He noted that both parents of the groom and bride spent a lot of money during the marriage due to innovations.

Mallam Shall explained that the ban will come into effect when people are fully sensitized while a monitoring committee will be set to ensure full compliance with the order and marriage will not be conducted for any violator.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chairman of the council in the area, Alhaji Abdullahi Santuraki said before the council arrived at the decision a committee of Ulama met with critical stakeholders on the matter.

 He stated that the law banning innovations in Islamic marriage will be binding on all Muslims of status in the society.

 In his message, the Adamawa State chairman Muslim Council, Alhaji Gambo Jika represented by Alhaji Ibrahim Dan-mama expressed delight in the efforts of the council in the area for ensuring that are marriages are done based on Islamic tenets. Also, in a remark, M.D Fadama oil Alhaji Ilyasu Fadamarake called on Muslims to unite for the progress of Islam.

Three papers were presented by eminent scholars on ‘The Institution of marriage in Islam’, ‘The Innovations attached to marriage in our inherent dispensation’, and ‘Politics in Islam’.
