Health37 Inmates Infected by Monkeypox in Adamawa

YOLA — 37 inmates at the Jimeta Correctional Centre in Yola North local government area of Adamawa State were affected by Monkeypox. Health authorities said.

Adamawa State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Isa Abdullahi while addressing journalists at the Specialist Hospital Jimeta Thursday said due to health interventions all the affected persons recovered without any death recorded.

“Adamawa State recently recorded its first-ever confirmed cases of monkeypox early this year 2022. After a few weeks, an outbreak of the same disease (monkeypox) occurred in the Yola North prison with 3 inmates’ affected, necessary public health interventions were instituted, and all recovered without any death recorded.

“Since we have not recorded any case despite heightened surveillance for cholera for several weeks, we (government and partners) are happy to declare the cholera outbreak over. Since the beginning of the outbreak, a total of 1,959 suspected cases with 55 deaths (CFR=2.8%) were recorded,” he added.

Abdullahi recalled that on the thirtieth of June 2021, the state recorded a suspected case of cholera from Gurura community in Girei Local Government which led to the declaration of an outbreak of cholera in July 2021.

He said with the support from World Healthy Organizations and other partners, personnel were recruited, trained and engaged while medications were supplied for cholera management as well as household water purification into the affected area leading to containment of the disease.

The commissioner revealed that 12 suspected case of Lassa fever and 812 cases of measles is being recorded in the state and urged citizen to support government in prompt reporting any strange case or unfamiliar illness

The Commissioner thanked all partners and individuals who supported Adamawa State Government with contributions in containing virus outbreaks.

He appreciates the role of traditional and religious leaders in mobilizing the people in controlling virus outbreaks which have contributed to saving and protecting public health.

Abdullahi also appealed to development partners, interest groups and individuals to continue to work in synergy to build sustainable water sanitation and Hygiene across the twenty one local governments.
