Olubankole Wellington, known as Banky W, a Nigerian singer, has again won the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) ticket for the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency, Lagos.
The singer won the election with 24 votes against his opponent, Sam Aiboni, a legal practitioner, who got only five votes in the rerun election.
Banky W’s victory comes two weeks after he won the initial ballot with 27 votes, but controversies trailed his victory as the result slip showed his opponent, Aiboni, who polled only two votes, as the winner.
The dispute compelled the party’s leadership to cancel the initial election and fix a rerun for Monday, June 6.
The election, which took place at the party secretariat on Alpha Beach road in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lekki, started at 4:45 p.m., and was held for 30 minutes with two contestants—Banky W and Sam Aiboni—28 delegates from the wards and one national representative which made it a total of 29 delegates. However, two delegates were absent.
At the end of the election, the returning officer, Ojosegun Abayomi, declared Banky W the winner and described the process as peaceful and transparent.
Reacting to his victory, Banky W expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to represent it and said he was very thankful to the people as well.
Sharing the results sheet on his Instagram page, he wrote the caption: “Grateful for the win, ready for the work. Thank you Lord, thank you PDP, thank you Eti-Osa & Lagos. Thank you everyone. God bless us all.”
