Nigerian singer and songwriter, Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, has been diagnosed with Reflux Laryngitis, a voice disorder that results from irritation and swelling of the vocal folds.

Tems disclosed the sad development via her social media pages.

The singer’s heartfelt note to her fans read: “It breaks my heart to say this but there’s no other option for me. I’m not feeling too good at the moment.

“After my last performance, I was diagnosed with Reflux Laryngitis and I have to take some time off to protect what’s left of my voice.

Announcing the postponement of her Birmingham and London shows earlier slated for June 15, and July 17, 2022 respectively, she added: “All tickets are still valid! Again, I am sorry. I am sorry for this inconvenience but I promise to be back better than ever by the grace of God. Then, I’ll give you the best show ever.”

According to the Department of Otolaryngology, University of Pittsburgh, Reflux Laryngitis is a voice disorder that results from irritation and swelling of the vocal folds due to the backflow of stomach fluids into the throat.

The disturbance can also injure vocal cords and change one’s voice, especially if the reflux causes enough inflammation.

Typical symptoms include hoarseness, a sensation of a lump or excess mucous in your throat, excessive need to clear your throat, and a non-productive cough.
