The Chairman/CEO of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Gen. Muhammad Buba Marwa (retired) says the agency has secured the conviction of at least 984 drug addicts and traffickers from January 2022 to date.

Marwa who disclosed this at his personal residence in Yola, the Adamawa State capital when he granted an audience to the new Executives of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Adamawa State council led by its Chairman, Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan.

“About 15 million out of the 200 million Nigerians are into drug addiction, every Nigerian must rise up to the challenge.

“President Muhammad Buhari has launched ‘War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) to reinvigorate the fight against hard drugs” he said.
Marwa who congratulated them on their victory charged them to champion the fight against drug abuse through the media.

“Mass media has a critical role to play in the fight against drugs abuse and related crime in Nigeria,” attributing the success recorded by the NDLEA since his assumption of office to cordial working relationship and sustainable partnership with mass media and appealed to journalist to maintain the spirit.

He stressed the need for intensive advocacy and enlightenment as well as counselling of youths in fight against drugs abuse as more rehabilitation centers are on the way across the nation.

“Stakeholders including parents, religions, land community leaders as well as teachers should rise up and face the challenge of drugs abuse and circulation for decent society,” Marwa said.

Adamawa state NUJ Chairman, Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan earlier said his team was at the residence to introduce themselves and solicit partnership with the agency.

Dedan, commended the NDLEA Boss over subduing trafficking of hard drugs and addiction across the nation and pledged the union’s support and cooperation in enlightening the public on the scourge of hard drugs.

“The union is proud with you for turning the fortunes of the agency around and also giving Adamawa a sense of pride, and it is our prayer that God will guide you in discharging your duties,” he said.
