The United States Government has honoured late Deborah Samuel.
The West African Pilot News reports that Samuel, a 200-level student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE), Sokoto, was lynched on campus by some Islamic extremists for blasphemy on 12 May.
Deborah’s photo was uploaded on the website of the US Office of Religious Freedom whose mission is to promote universal respect for freedom of religion or belief.
It also monitors religiously motivated abuses, harassment, and discrimination worldwide, and recommend, develop, and implement policies and programs to address these concerns.
Samuel was one out of nine persons whose photos was uploaded on the website to mark the fourth US International Day Commemorating the Victims of Violence Based on Religion or Belief on 22 August.
“In May, a mob brutally stoned, flogged and burnt to death college student, Deborah Samuel, in Nigeria, in an attack fuelled by hatred and blasphemy allegations, even as authorities attempted to stop it. We honour her life as we continue the work to end such vicious violence,” the office stated on its website.
