ABUJA — President Muhammadu Buhari would on Tuesday, 11 October 2022 confer national honour awards on 437 Nigerians, including seven foreigners.

The event, which will hold at the State House, Abuja, would be part of a series of activities to mark Nigeria’s 62nd independence anniversary.

The national honours to be conferred are Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), and the Federal Republic Medal (FRM).

The West African Pilot News gathered that the recipients of the awards include politicians, public servants, businessmen, scholars, security officers, senior lawyers, musicians, traditional and religious leaders as well as deceased persons.

Meanwhile, the federal government has distanced itself from the list of nominees for the award which went viral on the Internet over the weekend.

Some media organisations had over the weekend published series of names purported to be on the list of nominees to be conferred with the national awards.

However, in a statement signed by the Director Press, Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Julie Jacobs, on Monday, the federal government debunked the list, saying it will publish the ‘authentic’ list at the appropriate time and medium.

Mrs Jacobs described the purported list being circulated by the media organisations as fake, and advised the public to disregard the list, which she described as an attempt by overzealous reporters whose aim is to break news even when such news is fake.

The statement read: “The attention of the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs has been drawn to a purported list of nominees for national honours being circulated by some online media organisations.

“While it is true that President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, will be conferring national honours on deserving Nigerians and friends of Nigeria on 11 October 2022, the authentic list of nominees is yet to be released to the public.

“The Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs will publish the list at the appropriate time and medium.

“Members of the public are, hereby, enjoined to discountenance the list in circulation as it is an attempt by overzealous reporters whose aim is to break news even when such news is fake.”
