New British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has vowed to fix the errors made by his predecessor, Liz Truss.

Sunak was yesterday appointed as Britain’s third prime minister this year after Truss resigned amid a financial and political crisis.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street in central London, after being appointed prime minister by King Charles III, Sunak paid tribute to Truss, whose 50-day tenure plunged Britain into even deeper economic turmoil.

He said, “She has led with dignity and grace through a time of great change and under exceptionally difficult circumstances both at home and abroad.”

Sunak spoke of Truss’s ‘noble’ aims but said some ‘mistakes’ had been made, which were his responsibility to fix.

“She was not wrong to want to improve growth in this country. It is a noble aim and I admired her restlessness to create change but some mistakes were made, not born of ill will or bad intentions, but mistakes nonetheless,” he said.

“And I have been elected as leader of my party—your prime minister—in part to fix them, and that work begins immediately.”

Departing Downing Street a little before, Truss wished Sunak ‘every success’. She also dropped a congratulatory message for him on Twitter and promised her ‘full support’.

“Congratulations @RishiSunak on being appointed as Leader of the Conservative Party and our next Prime Minister. You have my full support,” the former prime minister wrote.

Sunak is the first person of colour, the first British-Asian and the first Hindu to lead the United Kingdom.

He is also the first prime minister to be anointed by King Charles III since he ascended the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
