LAGOS — The national headquarters of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Yaba, Lagos went up in smoke in the early hours of Wednesday.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the head, of the public affairs department of WAEC, Moyosola Adesina.

Adesina said the fire was “swiftly contained by a combined team of firefighters.” She added that “no life was lost and all important documents and records are intact.”

In its report, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said “the fire started on the third floor of the 12-storey building due to a power surge.”

The agency said seven persons who were trapped on the fifth and seventh floors during the inferno were rescued, and that the fire had been put off.

“A total of seven female staff of the Corporation were trapped on the fifth and seventh floors and were safely evacuated due to the swift response of the rescue team on the ground. The fire has also been put off and dampening down concluded,” LASEMA permanent secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said.

It was gathered that LASEMA alongside its paramedics team, Lagos State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, University of Lagos (UNILAG) Fire Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) were among the firefighters and emergency workers on ground to evacuate people from the building and put the situation under control.
