ENUGU — The Enugu State Police Command has arrested six suspects for infringing on the human rights of a woman who was stripped naked for picking snails at a shrine in Agunese, Afam-Mmaku in Awgu Local Government Area, Enugu state.
The victim’s husband and brother who came to rescue and stop the men from perpetuating their barbaric act were beaten up while the men had their way; stripped naked of the woman.
Ordering a full-scale investigation on the above matter and speedy prosecution of the culprits, CP Ammani, Commissioner of Police Enugu State Command condemns the act describing it as dehumanization and degradation of humanity.
“The said acts of torture, dehumanization and degradation of the person of the victim in contravention of extant laws, especially those bordering on her dignity and fundamental human rights is condemnable,” CP Ammani wrote in
The Commissioner then urge, “Citizens of the State, particularly traditional rulers and other community leaders, should ensure that utmost caution is exercised when enforcing traditional or customary norms on their subjects, especially if doing so will lead to the contravention of the constitutionally enshrined fundamental rights of the person.”
Preliminary investigation shows that youths of Agunese, Afam-Mmaku in Awgu Local Government Area numbering over twenty (20), were involved in the dastard acts; many are at large while 6 are in Police custody.
The leader of the persons who beat up, stripped and paraded the victim round the community is Okoro Stan aged 46.
Others include: Jonathan Nwangene aged 43, Maduabuchi Madueke aged 34, Obioma Nwangene aged 39, Anikene Samuel aged 24 and Chukwuebuka Agu aged 32.
