To curb the rising insecurity in the state, the Enugu State House of Assembly on Tuesday moved a motion that permanent checkpoints be established at identified black spots and boundary locations in boundary communities across the state.

Mr. Jeff Mbah, member representing Oji-River State Constituency and Chairman House Committee on Information while moving the motion said this has become imperative because delay or inaction will help the criminals gain more grounds or overrun some of the communities.

Standing on rules 59 and 70 of the House standing orders, Mbah who moved a motion of urgent public importance urged that an all-inclusive stakeholders approach be employed.

In the motion, the Chairman of House Committee on Information made three prayers which were supported by all the legislators and thereby moved by the House;

“That this Honorable House urges the Government of Enugu State to set up and equip a joint military, police, and forest guard to decisively tackle the menace once and for all, especially this Christmas period and thereafter so that we will usher in the New Year on a safety note.”

“That permanent checkpoints be established at boundary locations in boundary communities across Enugu State as well as in identified black spots within the state.”

“That every representative of various Local Government Areas and constituencies including members of Enugu State House of Assembly should be encouraged to Join Hall meetings and organize their stakeholders to be part of sensitization on a collection of intelligence as well as moral and financial support for security in our various communities.”

One common factor in the contributions of All House members present at the plenary session is the need for a decisive and all-inclusive approach to curbing the menace.

The lawmakers also revealed the possible collaboration of indigenes with external forces in the killings and destructions hence the need for town hall meetings with stakeholders for situation analysis and to proffer lasting solutions.

“Whereas we are not unaware that there could be sabotage and compromises here and there in the fight against insecurity, one effective option is a concerted effort and involvement of all implements and persons needed for success to be achieved.”

“Therefore, it has become necessary that a joint effort involving all stakeholders across party lines, hunters, strategic business owners, businessmen, Traditional authorities, and all security agencies combine efforts in surveillance and collection of intelligence to nip the ugly situation in the bug,” Jeff Mba reiterates.

In another development, the House received and approved the message from the Governor of Enugu state, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on the presentation of the year 2023 Enugu State Budget on Thursday 15th December 2022.
