…Reps Move To Ban Alcohol Consumption By Policemen

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Yakubu Maikyau, has said the Association is suspicious of how the Nigeria Police are handling the case of the Lagos female lawyer, Bolanle Raheem, as the House of Representatives proposes a ban on alcohol consumption by policemen.

Raheem was shot by an Assistant Superintendent of Police on Christmas Day while returning from an eatery in their car with her sister, and four children when the incident happened.

Yakubu Maikyau stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

“We have a suspicion about how this matter is being handled by the police. I listened to the force Public Relations Officer yesterday (Wednesday) when he appeared on Channels TV.

“He talked about certain processes that have to be followed before the investigation commences and all of that. I don’t agree with that because that doesn’t represent the position of the law.

“Of course, if you look at the Police Act 2020, if you read Section 96 of that act and Section 103 of that act, it is very clear. There is nothing that can be interpreted in that act that is not allowing for the prosecution of that officer or subjecting the investigation of that police officer to certain internal mechanisms of the Nigeria Police,” Maikayau said.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has called for a ban on police officers consuming alcohol and other hard substances “capable of inhibiting their sense of reasoning”.

The House adopted a motion of “urgent public importance” by a member from Lagos state, Babajide Obanikoro, at plenary on Wednesday.

Adopting the motion, the house demanded a “thorough investigation” of the killing as well as other cases of “extrajudicial murder” committed by police officers.

The lawmakers also agreed that the provisions of the Nigerian Police Act dealing with the general conduct of officers should be reviewed.

Obanikoro recounted a recent shooting incident wherein “without any altercation, one of the officers shot dead Mrs. Raheem who was seven months pregnant with twins, on the spot”.

He recalled that a similar incident happened on December 7 when officers from the same police station gunned down a young man, sparking unrest.

Obanikoro expressed concern that such incidents happen often across the country, adding that the officers usually got away with “killing innocent citizens” they swore to protect.
