In line with the Joint Tax Board initiative to combat multiple-taxation in the country’s haulage system, Enugu State Government has launched a Single Interstate Road Tax Sticker, SIRTS.

Unveiling the stickers, the Executive Chairman of Enugu State Internal Revenue Service, ESIRS, Prince Emeka Odo at the launch explains, “the JTB, last year, introduced the Single Haulage Fee (SHF) at points of loading and off-loading in states of departure or discharge and the Single Inter-State Road Taxes Sticker (SIRTS) for any vehicle within Nigeria.”

“In the interest of the tax payers, the Enugu state government has approved and adopted the mandate (SIRTS & SHF) with effect from January 1, 2023; Enugu State will now make use of a Single Inter State Sticker for all commercial vehicles that ply its road anywhere in the state,” Odo reveals.

“The Single Interstate Road Tax Sticker is an E-Sticker designed to capture all vehicles that perform inter-state haulages in the country. This is with a view of providing adequate social security and combating multiple taxation for inter-state haulages throughout the country,” Joint Tax Board.

On the modalities of operation, Odo explains, “All motorists are expected to pay for SIRTS either at the point of registration/renewal of papers or with the Enugu State approved consultant while SHF will be paid per trip.”

“These payments made at the point of loading must be through a profiled vendor who will capture the details of the haulage operator into the system which will use the information to determine the amount to be paid; sticker not bought from ESIRS is illegal.”

To forestall illegal duplication of the stickers, Odo reveals that the Enugu State Internal Revenue has put up measures; adoption of both physical and electronic stickers. The electronic stickers will have a Quick Response Code that will enable seamless verification of its validity and a Point of Sale payment printout.

“The electronic sticker is enhanced with internal control mechanism which comes with specialized bar codes and embedded details which includes vehicle particulars and serial numbers for authentication.”

“It also comes with new improved security features such as anti-counterfeit properties and authentication system against fraud,”

“Our E-enforcement teams are equipped with a device that can capture number of a vehicle from a 100-meter radius; this system automatically checks compliance level without stopping the vehicle.”

“Only non-compliant vehicles will be impounded and grounded at the next entry/exit point. Note that upon registration, e-stickers will be available to the taxpayer within 48 hours.”

“With the kind permission of His Excellency, the Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, I hereby declare the sale of these stickers open,” the ESIRS Chairman said.
