Residents of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, yesterday, vandalized a branch of Wema Bank during a revolt against the nationwide petrol and naira notes scarcity that has lamed the economy.

The protest reportedly started at the Agodi gate, the intersection that leads to the state secretariat and the government house.

Carrying placards bearing different inscriptions, the protesters stormed the state secretariat with sticks and other dangerous weapons while forcing the two main gates open.

An armed police officer attached to the governor’s office was reportedly injured by the mob, forcing other security operatives on the ground to take cover.

The uproar later spread to Iwo road, Gate, and other busy areas in the city after the protesters were dispersed by security personnel (Operation Burst) for starting a bonfire near the secretariat.

Point of sale (POS) merchants were also attacked in some parts of the city over the exorbitant fees they charge for transactions.

The riot caused traffic congestion in the capital city and grounded commercial activities.
