President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that solutions are underway to speed up the distribution of the new naira notes and to forestall the teething cash scarcity in seven days.

President Buhari gave the assurance during a closed-door meeting with the governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the aegis of the Progressive Governors’ Forum.

The meeting was held at the State House in Abuja on Friday.

Governors present in the meeting were that of Ebonyi, Ogun, Imo, Zamfara, Kebbi, Yobe, Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, and Niger states.

Reacting to reports of long queues of people at banks and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) stands to deposit old notes and get new ones which have triggered public anger, President Buhari said the grievances of Nigerians with the cash swap policy were being looked into.

He expressed optimism that before the 10 February deadline given by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), there would be ‘significant improvements’ for Nigerians to enjoy the benefits of the policy.

“I am aware of the cash shortages and hardship being faced by people and businesses, on account of the naira redesign,” the president wrote on Twitter at the end of the meeting.

“I want to assure that we are doing everything to resolve these issues. Nigerians should expect significant improvements between now and the February 10 deadline.

“I met with a delegation of governors today, on the matter. All the complaints about the execution of the currency change are being seriously looked into.

“I will ensure that everything is resolved in a lasting manner, and we will all enjoy the long-term benefits of the decision.”
