Justice John Okoro of the Supreme Court, on Wednesday, directed the federal government to ensure the availability of currency to Nigerians.

Justice Okoro gave the injunction at the hearing of the case brought against the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the deadline for old naira notes by the governments of Zamfara, Kogi and Kaduna states.

He told the lawyer to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi (SAN), “Tell your client to let people have money. Make money available to the poor masses. You should know that a hungry man is an angry man. I say no more.”

On 8 February, the apex court restrained the federal government from implementing the 10 February deadline on the use of the old N200, N500, and N1000 notes by the CBN and adjourned the matter to Wednesday, 15 February.

However, on Tuesday, the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele insisted that the extant banknotes ceased to be legal tender on 10 February and urged Nigerians to visit any CBN branch to deposit the old notes

At the court hearing on Wednesday, the court further adjourned the hearing of the case to Wednesday, 22 February.

Justice Okoro, who presided over a seven-member panel of the court, said its 8 February order barring the federal government from enforcing the 10 February deadline for the use of old naira notes still stands.
