NewsNigeriaPoliticsDino Melaye tells court INEC used false figures to declare Tinubu winner of presidential election

Dino Melaye, the Peoples Democratic Party’s, PDP, governorship candidate in Kogi State, told the Presidential Election Petition Court on Friday that the final result of the presidential election was wrongly computed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Melaye, the PDP’s national collation officer during the February 25, 2023, presidential election, was the 22nd witness presented by the party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar in their petition to nullify INEC’s declaration of Tinubu as the winner of the election.

Led in evidence by Atiku’s lead counsel, Chris Uche, SAN, the former senator told the court that he protested the election results during collation and had to walk out of the national collation centre before the end of the process because the goings-on was intolerable to him.

He also said that he, among other PDP agents, refused to sign the final collated election results so as not to be part of corruption and malpractices that allegedly engulfed the collation exercise. According to him, the results presented by the state returning officers were not the ‘real’ results of the election in the states.

Melaye decried INEC’s failure to transmit the election results electronically to its results viewing portal. He pointed out that this was an infringement of the law.

The Kogi governorship aspirant argued that the electronic transmission of results from the polling units onto the INEC Result Viewing, IReV, portal was a very important aspect of the election process, adding that without that, the election could not be said to have been completed.

The hearing continues on Monday, June 19.
