Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has rewarded the overall best student of the Lagos State University, LASU, Aminat Yusuf with N10 million.

Announcing the donation during the 26th convocation and 40th anniversary of the institution on Thursday, the Governor said he is giving Yusuf N5 million personally while N5 million is from the state government.

Yusuf, a law student, graduated with a perfect cumulative grade point average, CGPA, of 5.0, the first in the history of the university.

Sanwo-Olu said, “Congratulations to Aminat Yusuf Imoitsemeh for graduating with a perfect CGPA of 5.0 in Law. I’m pleased to announce a personal donation of N5 million and an additional N5 million from the State Government to recognise her outstanding achievement. Well done Aminat!”

The Governor also extended his congratulations to all the graduating students, urging them “to continue making positive contributions to our nation’s development.”

LASU graduated a total of 10,183 students from the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic sessions, with 282 bagging first class. The university also graduated 1,604 postgraduate diplomas, academic masters, professional masters, doctor of philosophy and professional doctorate levels.

Also, the ex-governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola; ex-governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi; the Oba Saheed Elegushi of Elegushi Kingdom in Lagos; among others were conferred with honorary doctorates.

Fashola was honoured with Doctor of Humane Letters (urban and rural community development and youth empowerment); while Fayemi received Doctor of Humane Letters (human rights, national integration and African security development).

The chief of staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila was honoured with a Doctor of Law (education, community and national development); and the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, received Doctor of Humane Letters (child healthcare, environmental development and women empowerment).

Oba Elegushi bagged Doctor of Arts (broadcasting, community integration and human rights advocacy); the Oniba of Iba Kingdom, Oba Sulaimon Raji-Ashade, the Oniba Ekun of Iba land, received Doctor of Humane Letters (grassroot development); and the general overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Daniel Olukoya was honoured with Doctor of Science (genetics and biotechnology).

An appreciation award was given to Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, a former deputy governor of Lagos State, for her consistent support and contributions to the development of the physical infrastructure of the university.

The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello said the honourary doctorates were conferred on these “illustrious personalities” for their “immense contributions to the growth and development of the institution and society.”
