The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) in an effort to reduce the use of fossil fuel vehicles that pollute the environment and contribute to global warming on Friday inaugurated a Solar-Powered Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN).
Speaking at the event, yesterday, the Director General, National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Mr. Jelani Aliyu, said many countries are now moving away from fossil fuel vehicles to electric vehicles because of the effects of global warming in the environment.
The DG who was represented by the Director, the Industrial Infrastructure Department of the council, Nua Omisanya Ibrahim, said the project is aimed at developing research work in the area of vehicle electrification through human capital development.
“This informs the reason the NADDC, an agency in the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, is sponsored by the government to build Electric Vehicle Charging Stations powered by solar across the country,”
“The aim is to ensure zero percent carbon emission in our environment as well as reduce health problems associated with it,” DG NADDC said.
“In furtherance to the council’s bid to promote the research, design, and adoption of EVs, NADDC had developed three 15KVA Solar-powered EV charging Stations at three Federal Institutions;”
“Three Universities selected for the pilot stage for the Solar Powered Charging Electric Vehicle Stations are Usman Danfodio University Sokoto, University of Lagos, and University of Nigeria Nsukka.”
Encouraging Universities in the country to research and develop the project, he reveals that the Usman Dan-fodio University, Sokoto, and University of Lagos charging stations were inaugurated in 2021.
The Director General NADDC then commended the Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Charles Igwe, and management for the maximum cooperation and effort put into the project and facilitation of its inauguration.
In response, the UNN Coordinator of the project, Prof. Ozomena Ani, an engineer and lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering, assures of his research team’s dedication to maintenance and swift running of the project.
NADDC is an agency in the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment; it is sponsored by the government to build electric vehicle charging stations powered by solar across the country.
