Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, hailed President Bola Tinubu’s courageous decision to eliminate the subsidy on petroleum motor spirit, commonly referred to as fuel.
He viewed this move as a vital and transformative disruption with the potential to reshape the nation’s economy.
Recognizing the far-reaching impact of the subsidy’s removal, Governor Soludo collaborated with teachers affiliated with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Anambra State Wing, to brainstorm solutions that would alleviate its effects on their constituents.
Addressing the 9th (7th Quadrennial) Delegates Conference of the Union, held at Teacher’s House in Awka under the theme “Petrol Subsidy Removal: its impact on the teacher and learner, the way forward,” Governor Soludo pointed out Nigeria’s tendency to deny its financial realities.
He criticized the practice of printing and infusing money into the system, which has led to inflation. In light of this, he commended President Tinubu’s bold move.
Governor Soludo underscored the necessity for the country to acknowledge its economic limitations and adopt responsible financial practices.
He urged leaders at all levels to set an example by living within their means and demonstrating this to the population.
Highlighting the universal effects of subsidy removal, Governor Soludo reiterated that the administration’s strategy to mitigate the impact covers both immediate and medium-term efforts.
He assured citizens that his government would increase teacher recruitment and uphold accessible, quality education for the state’s residents.
Prior to this, Mrs. Nonye Chibueze, the Anambra State NUT Chairman, commended the Governor’s initiatives in education. However, she stressed the need for more teacher recruitment, particularly in nursery and primary schools.
