Mavin Records signees Rema and Ayra Starr, at the 16th Headies Awards, won the ‘best male artist’ and ‘best female artist’ of the year awards, respectively.

The annual show that recognise outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry took place on Sunday night at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. This year’s show was themed ‘Celebrating African Renaissance.’

Ayra Starr was pitted against Tiwa Savage, Simi and Tems, while Rema competed against Asake, Kizz Daniel, Ruger, Omah Lay and Burna Boy.

Apart from the ‘best male artist’ award, Rema also won the ‘digital artist of the year’ and ‘African artist of the year’ awards, and his ‘calm down’ visuals directed by Director K won the ‘best music video’ award.

Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last’ won the ‘song of the year’ and ‘Afrobeats single of the year’ awards, and his Ed-Sheeran-featuring ‘For My Hand’ won the ‘best R&B song’ of the year award.

Asake emerged as the ‘next rated’ artist among strong rivals like Spyro, Seyi Vibez, Young Jonn and Victony. He also took home the “album of the year’ award for ‘Mr. Money With the Vibes’.

Wande Coal won the ‘best vocal performance’ in the male category with ‘Kpe Paso’ while Waje won the award in the female category with ‘In Between’.

HEADIES VIEWERS’ CHOICE: ‘Soweto’ by Victony.

BEST RECORDING OF THE YEAR: ‘Soweto’ by Victony and Tempoe

BEST WEST AFRICAN ARTISTE OF THE YEAR: Black Sherif (Ghana).

BEST NORTH AFRICAN ARTISTE OF THE YEAR: El Grande Toto (Morocco).
