Nigeria is ranked sixth globally for organized crime, according to the 2023 Global Organized Crime Index, a global x-ray of organised crime.

The report, released on Wednesday, noted that the status of organised crime in Nigeria increased by 0.13 points from 7.14 points in 2021 when Nigeria was ranked fifth.

The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime scored Nigeria 7.28 out of 10 points, making it the sixth country in the world with the highest crime record. Myanmar took the top spot with a criminality score of 8.15.

In Africa, Nigeria is second behind the Democratic Republic of Congo (7.35) and ahead of South Africa (7.18).

In the criminal actors category, Nigeria has 7.20 points while it scored 8.50 points in the criminal network score.

The survey also scored Nigeria 5.50 points for the presence of mafia-style criminal groups, 7.00 points for private-sector criminal actors and 7.50 points for state-embedded criminal actors.

The Nigerian government has been battling diverse forms of criminal activities across the country in recent times.

There is a surge of kidnappings in the North West, a festering Islamist insurgency in the North East, oil theft in the Niger Delta, intense sectarian and herder-farmer clashes in the central region and a violent secessionist movement in the South East.
