A police checkpoint in Mairari, Konduga LGA in Borno State came under a heavy terrorist attack on Monday night, but the policemen held the attackers down.
There was a gun battle between the police and the Islamic State of the West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists.
The rebels retreated after a 15-minute futile attempt to crack down on the police formation.
The terrorists stole two rifles belonging to the police and only damaged the police armoured personnel carrier (APC) after the officers put up a plucky defence to stop the APC from being razed.
“The APC was damaged as we were chasing the terrorists toward their withdrawal route,” a source told Zagazola Makama.
“As we were trying to overrun the terrorists who were holding GPMGs, another one fired at the APC forcing it to lose its memory.”
