Police authorities in Borno State prevented the University of Maiduguri, UNIMAID, from blowing up after it defused a bomb planted at the school gate by suspected terrorists.
Police spokesperson Nahum Daso said a “suspicious device” was spotted near the main gate of the tertiary institution at about 9:00 a.m. on Monday, 4 December.
The police bomb disposal team, otherwise known as the Explosive Ordinance Department, EOD, was immediately deployed to the scene.
The team confirmed the device to be a homemade improvised explosive device, IED.
“In swift response, the Command’s Explosive Ordinance Department swung into action and successfully defused the IED, without loss of lives or property,” Daso said.
The police combed the area to make sure there were no other hidden devices.
Daso said an investigation has begun to discover the culprits and find out their intents.
