The recent court pronouncements, especially on election-related cases have placed the judiciary on trial.
Justice John Tsoho, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court made the assertion in Abuja during a special session of the court to mark its new legal year and to commemorate its Golden Jubilee Anniversary.
“Within the last legal year, a total of 15, 025 cases were filed, while the total number of cases disposed of was 12, 870. When the left-over of 2,155 cases is added to the total number of cases carried over from the previous year, being was 142,755, we have a total of 144,910 cases pending at the end of the last legal year,” he said.
He noted that the Court would enter the new legal year with over 140,000 suits but expressed optimism that the Judges would rise up to the challenges of disposing off the cases as quickly as possible.
Justice Tsoho also stated that the court now has 38 Judicial Divisions and 95 Judges, and has become a significant pillar in the hierarchy of the nation’s Judiciary.
“The current public perception of the judiciary made it imperative for judges, to rise up and uphold the independence and sacredness of the judiciary,” he said.
