The Nigerian police announced on Monday that four of the gang of robbers behind the recent chilling bank robbery in Otukpo, Benue State, have been arrested.
Otukpo witnessed a deadly attack on 20 October when a gang of 12 to 20 heavily armed gunmen stormed branches of Access Bank, United Bank of Africa, Stanbic IBTC Bank, and Zenith Bank located in the commercial district of the town and stole millions from the banks’ vaults.
Before the bank raid, the robbers attacked the Otukpo police post; and disarmed and killed four police officers to demoralise the police. Four other persons including customers in the banks at the time of the robbery were killed.
Olukayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, said, at a televised press briefing in Abuja, that the police launched a sneak attack on the dare-devil robbers at their secret enclave.
The hard-fought battle to apprehend the criminals led to the death of two members of the robbery gang.
Egbetokun further said that the Nigerian police in the last 10 weeks rescued 134 kidnapped victims during different operations across the country.
The police also arrested 375 suspected kidnappers, 578 armed robbery suspects, 431 suspects for rape and other sexual-related offences, 724 murder/homicide suspects, and 2,343 suspects for other criminal offences
Firearms numbering up to 419 and 4,235 ammunition of various calibre were recovered during the operations.
