A soldier of Nigeria’s 35 Artillery Brigade in Abeokuta, Ogun State has reportedly died due to a negligent use of his personal weapon, the Nigerian Army, NA, said in a press statement on Wednesday.
A Nigerian media reported the suicide case, quoting an anonymous source who said the deceased took his life out of depression caused by ‘unpaid allowances.’ The newspaper identifies the soldier as Boyi ThankGod.
But authorities refuted the report, saying the late soldier alongside his colleagues deployed for duty on Monday, 15 January were “adequately fed in line with NA’s standard for troops’ on duties.”
The statement by the Nigerian Army says the deceased soldier “handled his personal weapon negligently and misfired, which resulted in his death.”
“His colleagues who heard the sound of the gunshot had rushed to the scene of the incident, only to find the soldier in the pool of his blood with gunshot wounds on the head,” the statement added.
Nigeria’s Army statement, signed by the acting deputy director of army public relations, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, said that authorities have commenced further investigation to “unravel the circumstances and possible remote cause of the unfortunate incident.”
