Nigeria has become the first African country to book a ticket to the upcoming 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup competition after a 1-0 win against Burundi on Saturday.

The 1-0 win in the final leg tie of the qualifying round secured a 2-0 aggregate victory for Nigeria Women’s U-20 national team, the Falconets, following their earlier 1-0 triumph in the first leg in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, a week ago.

During Saturday’s game, Burundi held firm, thwarting Nigeria’s attempts to score.

But Nigeria’s breakthrough came in the 79th minute when Esther Ajakaye netted a goal to hold off the hard-fighting Burundi girls.

Ajakaye doubled the lead in the 90th minute but the goal was ruled offside.

The Falconets will be among the 24 teams competing for glory in Colombia from 31 August to 22 September 2024.
