Anambra State House of Assembly has resumed plenary on Tuesday 22nd January, 2024. This is the first sitting of the House since adjournment last December for the Christmas and New Year break. During plenary, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somto Udeze announced a change in leadership which saw Hon. Noble Igwe, a member of the House representing Ogbaru I constituency emerge as the Deputy Minority Leader of the House. This change was necessitated by the removal of Hon. Douglas Nwachukwu Egbuna as a member of the House of Assembly, by the Court of appeal. Hon. Egbuna, a member of the PDP, who represented Onitsha North constituency I, is the only member of the House who lost his seat at the election tribunal. Egbuna lost his seat at the tribunal to Hon. Justice Azuka of the Labour Party.

Similarly, the Speaker announced slight changes in the House Committee Chairmanship. The new member, Hon. Justice Azuka, who is representing Onitsha North I constituency was announced as the new House Committee Chairman on CSO Establishment and Labour Matters. He was also announced by the Speaker as the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions, as well as a member of other committees. Hon. Patrick Udoba who is representing Anambra West, was moved to chair the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs from the Committee on Transport. While Hon. Kingsley Udemezue, representing Idemili North constituency was moved from chairing CSO and Labour to Chairman of House Committee on Transport.

The House also considered some bills during its first plenary for the year 2024. The Anambra State Safety Bill 2023, was read for the second time. So, also the Anambra State Energy Agency bill, was read for the second time. However, the committee report on the bill for a law to establish private colleges of nursing sciences and midwifery in Anambra State was presented and considered, read for the third and final time, and passed by the House.

A motion urging the governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to pay special attention to those living with disabilities who are qualified for employment, during recruitment, was moved by Hon. Augustine Ike, the member representing Nnewi North constituency, was unanimously supported by the House members and passed.

The House adjourned to Thursday after a motion for adjournment was moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, and seconded by the Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Noble Igwe.
