Nigerians will now pay the sum of N139,000 for the English Language Testing System, IELTS, registration from 1 February 2024.
IELTS is a globally recognised examination requires from non-native English speakers to prove their English language proficiency.
The cost of the examination registration was inflated by 29 per cent from the N107,500 currently being paid for the exam.
According to a statement on the British Council’s website, the prices were adjusted as follows: “IELTS on Computer Academic and General Training Modules: ₦139,000; IELTS on Paper Academic and General Training Modules: ₦134,000; UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI): ₦149,000; Life Skills: ₦130,000; and One Skill Retake (O.S.R): ₦87,570.”
The British Council said the upward review of the fee became necessary because of the “increased costs in the delivery of our exams” in Nigeria.
This is the second IELTS fee hike for Nigerians in five months.
In September 2023, the British Council raised the cost of IELTS from about N90,000 to N107,500, saying it was because of the need to sustain the high quality of standards of the test experience.
