The Anambra State House of Assembly has paid tribute to Rt. Hon. Anayo Nnebe, who died on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2024, after a brief illness. Mr. Nnebe was Speaker of Anambra 4th House of Assembly, between 2007 and 2011. Rt. Hon. Anayo Nnebe who hailed from Umuokpu village in Awka, Awka South local government area of Anambra State, had an eventful career in public service. First, he served as secretary of Awka South local government before he was elected into the House of Assembly in 2007, and was subsequently elected the Speaker of the House.

In 2011, Rt. Hon. Anayo Nnebe was elected to the House of Representatives to represent Awka South and Awka North federal constituency and served until 2015, however, he could not secure his return bid to the Green Chambers in 2019.

Upon his assumption of office in 2022, the governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo appointed Rt. Hon. Anayo Nnebe his Special Adviser on Legislative Matters, a position he held until his sudden demise on Wednesday. During plenary on Tuesday, the House suspended legislative activities to pay tribute to the demised former Speaker.

Reacting to his death, the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somto Udeze, described it as a shock. While admitting to the inevitability of death, he also remarked that it can only happen as God pleases. “Last week Friday, I was with Rt. Hon. Anayo Nnebe. We were together. But on Wednesday, we were at the mortuary to deposit him. But we can’t question God,” the Speaker said when he led members of the House of Assembly to the home of the departed former colleague to commiserate with his family. Speaking on the person of the deceased former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Udeze, Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, described Chief Anayo Nnebe as a passionate statesman. “He was passionate about Anambra State. Please, be strong.” the Speaker said.

The visiting members of the Anambra Assembly were received by the wife of the deceased and Kanayo Nnebe, his son.
