Anambra State House of Assembly on Thursday during plenary, summoned Mr. Joseph Orji, the Transition Chairman of Onitsha South local government, to appear on plenary on Tuesday, to defend a petition against him on allegations of highhandedness, interference, and obstruction of lawful revenue agent from doing his duty.

In a motion of urgent importance, Hon. Frederick Ezenwa, the member representing Onitsha South 1 constituency, called the attention of the House to a petition written against the local government chairman which might lead to a breakdown of law and order if not addressed. The House thereupon unanimously agreed to invite Mr. Orji, to explain the allegations of meddling with the revenue collection process in Onitsha South, to forestall a possible breakdown of order. Similarly, because the particular revenue is domiciled in the Ministry of Environment, the Commissioner for Environment Engr. Felix Odimegwu was also summoned to appear before the House on Tuesday. The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somto Udeze, after the resolution directed the Clerk to notify the invitees immediately so that they would appear before the House on the next adjourned date which is Tuesday, 6th February, 2024. Reacting to the development, the honourable member representing Onitsha South I, Hon. Fred Ezenwa in a brief interview said that the invitation was to resolve all grievances. “We are inviting them to settle all issues”, he said.

Meanwhile, the House of Assembly during plenary also passed another Bill into law. “A Bill for a law to provide for the consolidation, administration, and collection of all revenue due to the state and local government in Anambra State, establish the relevant administrative structure and provide for other related matters,” was read for the third time and passed after thorough deliberations of the committee report on the bill by House members. This is the second bill considered and passed by the Anambra State House of Assembly in two days.
