The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed the date for the re-run of the election in Enugu State for Wednesday 14th of February, 2024.

The Commission stated this in a press release signed by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education.

INEC encourages electorates not to be dissuaded by the outcome of the last re-run election but to come out to vote for their preferred candidates.

“We urge all eligible voters and stakeholders in the impacted Polling Units in Taraba and Enugu States to participate peacefully in the upcoming elections and support their preferred candidates.”

Recall that on Saturday 3rd of February 2024, INEC organized a re-run election for Enugu South Urban State Constituency and Igboeze North/Udenu Federal Constituency for Enugu state and 37 other constituencies across the nation as ordered by the Election Petition Appeal Tribunals; Bye-elections were also held in 9 constituencies to fill seats left vacant by the demise or resignation of members elected during the 2023 General Election, both in the National and State Houses of Assembly.

While the Bye-elections were successful except for the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency, the re-run elections in Akwa-Ibom, Enugu and Kano states were not without hitches; disruptions occurred at two Polling Units in the Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State and across all Polling Units in the Enugu South State Constituency of Enugu State and Kunchi/Tsanyawa State Constituency of Kano State, due to violence, thuggery and the hijacking of election materials.

In all the 8 Polling Units in Uwani-West ward (Enugu South Urban Constituency), the original results sheets were not available for inspection by voters before the commencement of polls, and aligning with the provisions of Section 24(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022, the election was suspended.

The statement reads, “The Commission has resolved to conduct a supplementary election in Taraba State and a new re-run election in Enugu State, both scheduled for Wednesday 14th February 2024.”

“Due to security concerns, the election in Kunchi/Tsanyawa State Constituency will be held at a later date, after further discussions with security agencies and stakeholders.”
