President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, gave his approval for the 36 State Governors to look into the creation of a state police that will cater for the security needs of each state of the federation, putting a stop to the years-long debate on the issue.
The establishment of a state was one of the resolutions reached at a meeting between the President, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the governors, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and some senior government officials at the State House, Abuja.
The measure was agreed upon to end the alarming escalation of terrorist violence across the country.
It is unclear when the state police will be established to stem the wave of insecurity in the country.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris said, at a press briefing after yesterday’s meeting, that the authorities still needed to work out the modalities of the agreement before implementation.
According to Idris, “More work needs to be done in that direction. A lot of meetings will have to happen between the Federal Government and sub-nationals to see the modalities of achieving this.”
Speaking at the meeting earlier, President Tinubu said his administration is poised to tackle all the nation’s challenges head-on.
“My stance is unequivocal: we must move aggressively to examine the issues raised, including the potential for establishing state police,” he stressed.
“I have also endorsed the training and equipping of forest rangers by sub-national governments,” the President disclosed, “to protect human and natural resources in our communities.”
On food security, the Head of State directed security agencies to crack down on anyone who hoards food items.
In his words, “We cannot allow speculators, hoarders, and rent seekers to undermine our efforts in ensuring that food is widely available to all Nigerians.”
He added, “I will not establish a price control board, nor will I approve the importation of food.”
“We must extricate ourselves from this predicament because importation only enables rent seekers to perpetrate fraud and mismanagement at our collective expense. Instead, we will support our farmers with schemes that encourage them to cultivate more food for the nation.”
