The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Enugu Zonal Command in conjunction with a Joint Task Force from Nigeria Police Force (5 teams) and Nigeria Customs Service (3 teams) in a sting operation arrested 115 suspected currency racketeers in Enugu.

The team recovered One Hundred and Ten million, Seven Hundred Thousand Naira (N110,700,000.00); Eight Thousand, Three Hundred and Sixty-eight United States Dollars ($8,368); One Hundred and Forty-Five Pounds (£145.00); Two Thousand, Seven Hundred Twenty-Five Euros (€2,725), 900 South African Rand, 32,000.00 CFA, 100 Turkiya, and 500 Bank Mozambique; a safe abandoned by one of the street hawkers was also recovered.

 

The EFCC social media account, X, states that the operation carried out by the Command and JTF at the popular Owerri Road in Ogui area in Enugu known for Bureau de Change market was to hunt down operators operating illegally.

“The suspects comprising 113 (One hundred and thirteen) males and two females were arrested in a sting operation at Owerri Road, Ogui, Enugu State, following credible intelligence about some bureau de change operators, currency speculators and street hawkers operating illegal foreign exchange markets in that environment.”

“Preliminary investigation showed that some of the suspects are foreigners from Niger Republic; they will be charged to court soon.”

The suspects are one hundred and thirteen males (113) and two (2) females.
