Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state has approved N1 billion for the training of basic-level teachers across its 27 local government areas.
He also allocated 58 utility vehicles to support the education secretaries and monitoring units across the 27 local government areas.
Since 2019, Governor Zulum’s administration has prioritized investments in school infrastructure and human capital, resulting in a significant decrease in the number of out-of-school children from over 2 million to 800,000.
During the inauguration of newly-appointed local government education secretaries in Maiduguri, Governor Zulum explained that more than 1,000 teachers, with O-Level certificates as their highest qualification, will undergo additional training to meet the minimum teaching standards.
“The training will encompass teachers without formal teaching qualifications, but who demonstrate potential as identified through competency tests,” he said.
The governor charged the newly-appointed education secretaries to deliver on their responsibilities, warned that underperformance would not be tolerated by government, saying replacements will be considered if necessary.
He instructed the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation to provide quarterly reports on the performance of each education secretary, with those failing to meet expectations subject to replacement.
Lawan Wakilbe, Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, disclosed that out of 126 applicants, 27 were selected as education secretaries based on their performance in competency tests.
