Three students of the Nasarawa State University, NSUK, are said to have died on Friday in Keffi and others sustained injuries in a stampede during rice distribution as palliative to them by the state government.

The incident occurred before the arrival of Gov. Abdullahi Sule at the convocation square of the institution where the bags of rice were kept.

An eye witnessed the incident, Moses Ajah said the crowd of students forced themselves into the square and overpowered the security personnel thereby causing a stampede.

“Some of the students were struggling with the police over the rice and as more students got information, the situation degenerated.

“As we speak some students are injured and receiving treatment at the school,” NAN quoted him as saying.

He said before the arrival of the Governor for the inauguration of the distribution exercise, some students picked up bags of rice and ran to their hostels and other places of residence.

At the time of filing this report, police officers were seen retrieving the palliatives from students.

When contacted, Mr. Abraham Ekpo, Information and Protocol Officer of the University confirmed the incident but is yet to get details.
