A Kano High Court judge sentenced a 47-year-old Chinese national, Frank Geng-Quangrong, to death by hanging on Tuesday.
The court found Geng-Quangrong guilty of the murder of his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, aged 22.
Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji delivered the verdict, stating the prosecution had presented a strong case.
“The defendant’s testimony is inconsistent. I hereby find him guilty,” the Judge said.
Geng-Quangrong, a resident of Kano’s Railway Quarters, had pleaded not guilty to the charge of culpable homicide.
“I didn’t kill Ummulkhulsum intentionally but stabbed her in self-defence after she grabbed my testes,” he told the court in defence.
The prosecution, led by Kano State Attorney-General Haruna Dederi, said the crime occurred on 16 September 2022, at Janbulo Quarters in Kano. Details regarding the motive remain undisclosed.
Six witnesses and four pieces of evidence were presented by the prosecution. The cause of Ms. Sani’s death is not included in court documents currently available.
While delivering the verdict, Justice Ado-Ma’aji recommended that the Kano State governor considers clemency for the convict, and Geng-Quangrong retains the right to appeal the sentence.
