A Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, pastor, Olugbenga Olawore, and 14 others kidnapped on Friday evening in Oyo State have been rescued.
Pastor Olawore, who serves at the Heaven’s Gate Parish in Ogun State, was reportedly returning from Ipapo town where he went to arrange for his mother’s funeral.
The kidnappers, yet to be identified, seized the travellers around 5:00 p.m. local time at the Maya axis of the Lanlate–Eruwa Road.
While details about the other abductees remain unclear, the Oyo State Police Command confirmed the abduction to the press on Sunday, adding that investigations are ongoing.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, disclosed that some of the victims were rescued hours after the incident and are “assisting with useful leads that can help the investigation.”
“All routes around the area, including the adjoining forest areas, are being combed,” Osifeso added, saying that the police are working with other security agencies and local hunters to locate the captives and apprehend the kidnappers.
A few hours after the police confirmed the abduction, the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, announced that the remaining victims, including Olugbenga Olawore, had been rescued.
According to him, “Since the incident was reported, the government has been in close contact with the state Commissioner of Police, Hamzat Adebola. His team and our security teams and all parties have done the needful as usual to ensure the safety of lives and property of our citizens.”
