MultiChoice, the leading satellite television provider in Nigeria, has announced significant price hikes across its DSTV and GOtv packages, citing operational costs and investment in content as reasons for the adjustment. This comes as a blow to subscribers already facing economic hardship.
The new pricing structure, effective 1 May 2024, sees significant increases across all DStv and GOtv bouquets. The DStv Premium package, the most expensive, jumps from N29,500 to N37,000, representing a 25.4 per cent increase. Other DStv packages like Compact Plus also see hikes in the 25-26 per cent range.
GOtv, the budget-friendly option, is not spared either. The Supa Plus package increases to N15,700 from N12,500, while the popular GOtv Max goes up to N7,200 from N5,700. Even the most affordable Jinja package sees a rise to N3,300 from N2,700.
In a statement to customers, Multichoice CEO John Ugbe acknowledged the impact on subscribers but cited rising business operation costs as the reason behind the price hike. This is the third increase for Multichoice in less than a year, raising concerns about affordability for many Nigerians.
The news has sparked reactions from subscribers, with some expressing frustration on social media. Many are considering downgrading their packages or switching to alternative entertainment options.
