To guarantee registration and legal identity for all children in Nigeria, aligning with the vision set forth by the United Nations (UN) organization for 2030, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) is seeking a robust collaboration with UNICEF.

Director General of the NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, stated this during a visit by UNICEF, led by Ibrahim Siseh, Chief Child Protection Officer in Abuja.

“The primary focus of the meeting was to establish a strategic alliance aimed at developing an action plan and awareness campaign to achieve universal registration and legal identity for Nigerian children, in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16.9, which stresses the importance of providing legal identity for all, including birth registration.

“The collaboration between UNICEF and NOA involves leveraging digital systems and existing health services to ensure every child receives a birth certificate.

“Overcoming household barriers and increasing demand for quality civil registration services are top priorities, along with engaging traditional communicators to influence customary practices and enhance social communication,” Issa-Onilu said.

The Director-General of NOA, underscored the organization’s dedication to collaborating with stakeholders on issues affecting women and children, including the promotion of family values and parenting and stressed the importance of community sensitization and the role of traditional leaders in advancing citizen registration agendas.

Issa-Onilu advocated the utilization of demographic databanks and traditional platforms to effectively reach Nigerians as the optimal approach to achieving campaign objectives like successful campaigns such as polio eradication and girl-child education.

He called for addressing challenges such as registration fees, emphasizing the collaboration’s aim to engage key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health and the National Population Commission (NPC), to ensure the smooth implementation of the registration process.
