The House of Representatives has called on the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, to halt the recently announced increase in electricity tariffs.
This action follows concerns raised by lawmakers regarding the fairness and timing of the price hike.
On 3rd April, NERC approved an increase in electricity tariffs for Band A customers, those classified as receiving at least 20 hours of daily power supply. The House of Representatives, however, argues that the process lacked transparency and fairness.
Hon. Nkemkanma Kama, a Labour Party member from Ebonyi State raised red flags about the “arbitrary hike”, expressing worries about potential discrimination within the policy.
Hon. Kama said, “What is more concerning are the reports indicating discrepancies in customer categorisation and widespread complaints regarding inadequate service despite increased charges.”
“This situation has not just sparked national anxiety, but it also threatens regulatory certainty and investor confidence in the sector, demanding immediate attention.”
Furthermore, the House questions the timing of the increase. Many Nigerians are already struggling with economic hardship, and most lawmakers like Hon. Kama believe this is not the right time to burden citizens with additional costs.
The House resolution demands a suspension of the new tariff and the establishment of a special committee, the House Committee on Power, Commerce, and National Planning.
The Committee will be tasked with investigating the NERC decision and holding public hearings to gather citizen feedback on electricity price regulation.
