In a major development for regional security, the Niger Republic military announced on Monday, 6 May 2024, the capture of Kachallah Mai Daji, a prominent figure in Nigerian terror groups.
Details surrounding the operation remain scarce, but officials in Niamey confirmed Daji’s apprehension.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama described Daji as a terroriser responsible for a decade of devastation across northeastern Nigeria.
Daji reportedly plagued villages bordering Niger, striking fear into communities like Tozai, Sabon Garin Darna, and Darna Tsolawo.
He has been a thorn in the side of both Nigerian and regional authorities for years. He is believed to be a leading figure in terror organisations operating in the volatile Lake Chad Basin region.
Daji was captured as he attempted to steal livestock across the border, highlighting the regional nature of the banditry problem.
Nigerian authorities have yet to officially comment on his capture. However, they will likely seek his extradition to face trial in Nigeria.
