The 10th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, AMVCAs, unfolded in a night of glamour and celebration at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos on Saturday. The ceremony honoured the best in African cinema and television, recognising outstanding achievements across various categories.
The biggest winner of the night was “Breath of Life,” directed by BB Sasore. The film garnered several awards, including the coveted prize for Best Movie. The actors in the movie also took home the awards in their respective categories.
The spotlight also shone on actors delivering powerful performances. The award for “Best Lead Actor” went to Wale Ojo (Breath of Life), while Kehinde Bankole (Adire) triumphed in the “Best Lead Actress” category.
Additionally, Demola Adedoyin and Genoveva Umeh won Best Supporting Actor and Actress respectively for their roles in Breath of Life. These wins recognise their exceptional talent and dedication to their craft.
Several other films and shows received recognition throughout the evening. “Jagun Jagun: The Warrior” secured the prize for Best Indigenous Language Movie (West Africa), while “Ormoilaa Ogol (The Strong One)” emerged victorious in the Best Indigenous Language Movie (East Africa) category.
The creativity and technical expertise behind the productions were also celebrated. Awards were presented for outstanding achievements in areas like cinematography, sound design, costume design, and more. “Over The Bridge” stood out for its artistic merit, winning awards for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.
The Best Makeup award went to “Mami Wata” while “Jagun Jagun: The Warrior” took home the Best Costume Design award. Grey Jones Ossai the sound designer for “Breath of Life” and “Blood Vessel” was recognised for his artistic talent as both movies won the Best Sound Design category.
The night was not just about established names. The AMVCAs also acknowledged the rise of fresh talent. Chimezie Imoh was presented with the Trailblazer Award, while industry veterans Richard Mofe Damijo and Idowu Philips (Iya Rainbow) received Lifetime Achievement Awards for their remarkable contributions to the film industry.
Overall, the 10th AMVCAs served as a vibrant showcase of African filmmaking excellence. The ceremony not only recognised achievements of the past year but also looked towards a promising future filled with creativity and captivating stories.
